All new cars are wired this way so that in a crash you don't have fuel being sprayed around causing a fire risk. In most cases (before modern engine management systems) the ignition signal from the coil is used to trigger a relay which in turn is connected to the fuel pump relay. The oil pressure switch can also be used which is also a good engine protection device. Well worth having and should be easy for any auto elec to set up.
